Product description: SMD Resistor MSIV - wirewound
Flame-retardant SMD wirewound resistor for power stages and current sensing
The SMD wirewound resistors of the MSIV series are designed for applications that require high power dissipation, medium resistance values and a wide temperature range. Depending on the size, the components provide rated powers of 0.5 W, 1 W, 2 W, 3 W or 5 W at 70 °C, with the permissible power derated linearly down to 0 W at +235 °C. This makes the series suitable for continuously loaded power stages, current limiting or current sensing in environments where standard chip resistors quickly reach their thermal limits.
The resistance range from 0.1 Ω to 1.2 kΩ covers typical values for power, control and measurement stages. Resistance tolerances from ±0.5% to ±5% allow the parts to be used both in coarse current limiting applications and in more demanding current and voltage measurements. The temperature coefficient is graded as follows: from ±20 ppm/°C for resistance values above 10 Ω, ±50 ppm/°C for 1–10 Ω and ±100 ppm/°C in the low-ohmic range below 1 Ω. This keeps the resistance value within a defined window over the specified temperature range from −55 °C to +155 °C and simplifies the design of thermally stressed circuits.
The wirewound technology of the MSIV series provides high robustness against continuous load and short-term overload. In addition, a non-inductive winding option is available, which is particularly suitable for current sensing and shunt applications in switched-mode power supplies, drive systems or power electronics where parasitic inductance can lead to measurement errors or overshoot. The epoxy-moulded, non-flammable housing (flame-retardant according to UL94 V-0) protects the resistive element and gives the components moisture resistance and low noise, which further increases reliability in industrial environments.
Load life, damp heat, high-temperature storage, dielectric strength and solderability tests are specified in the datasheet and underline the suitability of the MSIV series for robust, long-term stable applications – for example in current sensing modules, power control circuits or protection circuits where resistors must safely handle high currents over long periods.
